Confounding prejudice and breaking down barriers

ITV4 commissioned this ground-breaking two-part series to coincide with a history-defining moment in English football - 40 years since Viv Anderson became the first black footballer to win a full cap for the England national team.

Presented by the charismatic, outspoken Ian Wright, himself a rebellious pioneer in the 90s, Out of their Skin was broadcast to critical acclaim exactly four decades after Anderson’s historic debut.

Set to the soundtrack of four decades with an array of pioneers, some revered, others hugely under-appreciated, Out of their Skin examines the incredible story of England’s black footballers and the game’s complex relationship with race – then and now.

‘Superb … both sickening and inspiring’

Unique Insight

From a mere sprinkling of players 40 years ago, black English footballers have blazed a trail to reach the highest levels, confounding prejudice and breaking down barriers.

However, across its two episodes the series was also a wider profile of British society itself, encompassing themes such as racial tension, integration, political extremism and national identity, revealing how much is still to be done.
